Daily Tips for Sleeplessness Hibiscus

Hibiscus, a deep red-flowered plant originates from Hawaii, the tropical region of Asia (called rosa-Sinensis, meaning “rose of China”), and can be found in other warm climates. This plant’s flower blooms mostly year-round.

Hibiscus is rich in vitamin C, minerals, anti-oxidants, anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory agents.

Hibiscus medicinal benefits include, used to reduce high blood pressure, high cholesterol, treat colds, constipation, irritated stomach, improve digestion, fluid retention and protect the liver. Hibiscus is also known for speeding up metabolism helping with gradual weight loss.

Hibiscus tea calms the nervous system, reducing anxiety, and producing a relaxed mental state conducive for slumber. Hibiscus tea, also known as “Agua de Jamaica” has a tart, sour taste similar to cranberry and may be enjoyed hot or cold. Hibiscus tea is caffeine-free and comes in tea bags, powder, and dried loose pieces of the flower for brewing.

Directions: Boil the plant, particularly the flower, 1 tablespoon, in a medium saucepan for 7 minutes, strain and pour in a cup, enjoy unsweetened or add honey if desired. Spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger may be added depending on the desired taste.

*People with low blood pressure, a condition known as “Hypotension” should not consume hibiscus.
